Plastering Corners: How-to Guide

One of the most challenging parts of plastering a wall is getting into those hard to reach corners. Unfortunately, plastering corners is the one part of any plastering job that you need to do right to make the whole project look good. Therefore, there are several steps that professionals use to make plastering corners an easier task than you would believe possible. So here are the steps that expert plasterers use to reach those difficult corners. Also discover why you should use the services of professionals for plastering corners rather than doing it yourself.

Step 1: Using a Skim Bead

The first thing contractors use is a skim bead. A skim bead is a thin metal strip with a straight edge along its length that aids in accurately plastering corners. They measure the length of the corner, leaving a small gap from the ground to avoid plastering on the floor. They then cut the skim bead to length with a heavy duty pair of shears called tin snips. Once done, they will fix the skim bead to the corner so they can begin plastering. This is very precise work and only an expert team of plasterers should handle this job.

Step 2: Using a Corner Trowel

The one tool plasterers can rely on to plaster corners well is a corner trowel. Corner trowels are flat, adjustable tools that allow them to easily access those hard to reach corners. They apply the plaster to the trowel and spread it full on the outer edge of the skim bead for its whole length.

The contractors then run the trowel up the length of the bead to add extra thickness to the plaster. They will then carefully plaster the rest of the wall as usual. Do not worry about any excess lumps of wet plaster for now; as experienced plasters they will know how best to remove this so your corner will look perfect at the end.

Step 3: Finishing the Job

Once all the plaster is fully dried the plasterers will scrape any excess plaster off the skim bead. They do this by scraping the trowel along the edge of the bead. Once done you should be left with a sharp, crisp looking edge. Getting this task perfect takes practice, and therefore should be left in the hands of experts such as R & B Plastering.
