How to Safely Fix a Heavy Mirror to a Plasterboard Wall

If you are planning on fixing anything to a plasterboard wall, there are several steps you need to take to keep everything safe. Fixing a heavy mirror or shelving to a plasterboard wall might seem like a straightforward task. However, if you do it incorrectly you could end up damaging the mirror, the wall, and even harming yourself. So, what is the best way to fix a heavy mirror on your own plasterboard wall? Here is our guide to fixing a mirror safely to plasterboard.

Tools To Use When Hanging a Mirror

  • Mirror or picture frame.
  • Wood screws.
  • Brackets.
  • Hooks.
  • Marking tape.
  • Plasterboard anchors.
  • Plastic bumpers.
  • Power drill with steel bit.
  • Multipurpose detector.
  • Spirit level.

How to Fix Your Mirror

To attach the mirror or any other object to your plasterboard wall, follow these steps:

  1. First, check that the wall is made of plasterboard. To test it out, try putting pins or tacks into the wall. If they go in easily, then the wall may be made of drywall instead and thus not suitable.
  2. Check that your mirror already has attachments that allow for easy hanging. If so, the frame will be strong enough to support the mirror. If not, you can reinforce the mirror with brackets attached to the frame with screws.
  3. Weigh the mirror, either on scales or with whatever weighing equipment you have.
  4. Use your multipurpose detector to locate a stud in the wall. Mark the centre of the stud so you have a firm place to fix your frame. Also, be aware of any power outlets or wires that might be near the stud.
  5. Place your mirror over the area where you intend to fix it and mark the top of the frame.
  6. If the mirror frame comes with D rings or wire on the back, you can use two of the hooks to hang the frame. To determine the correct space between the hooks, use tape over a spirit level and mark the space where the hooks will connect with the rings or wire.
  7. Measure from the hook to the top of the mirror and transfer that measurement to the wall. Use your spirit level to mark the areas you intend to place the hooks.
  8. Use the power drill to install a plasterboard anchor in line with the stud.
  9. Attach plastic bumpers to the bottom corners to prevent the frame from scratching the wall.
  10. Attach the hooks as marked on the wall and gently hang the mirror on the hooks.
